H: 20cm W: 33cm D: 22cm An impressive Victorian Jewellery Strong Cabinet, veneered all over with the finest Burr Walnut, and having applied brass straps on all sides. The top features a finely fretted monogram together with an engraving of a fabulous fish surrounded by a heraldry belt which is engraved with a legend in Cornish 'FRANCA LEALE TOGE'*. The interior of the box is brass faced with maroon silk velvet and ruched panel inside the lid, which drops forward by means of a hidden release, revealing a secret area for letters, papers etc. A fitted lift out tray covers a deep compartment. The front panel, when released by means of hidden pressure points at either side, drops forward, revealing two drawers, each with burr walnut fronts and matching velvet lining. Both drawers have Chubb locks. The box is secured with a Bramah lock & key. *'FRANCA LEALE TOGE' is a legend in Cornish, which translates in English as 'FREE AND LOYAL ART THOU', the motto of Godolphin & Latymer School for girls in Hammersmith West London since 1905, formerly The Godolphin School, a boarding school for boys, founded in 1861. Sustainability
Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.

The Old Cinema

Spotlight | Victorian Period, 1837-1901

There was a huge increase in English furniture production during the second quarter of the 19th century, to cater for a rapidly growing middle class. This was made possible not by the machinery of mass production (which came towards the end of the century) but by a horde of servant woodworkers.

The style was flamboyant and imposing, with plenty of curves and glossy rounded corners, typically made in mahogany and rosewood, but oak was also popular for its weight and Britishness. Towards the end of the era the emphasis was on aggressively straight lines and dark stained solid wood. Old English and Continental styles were adopted, as well as a fashion for Anglo-Japanese fretwork panels and imitation bamboo.

Key examples of Victorian furniture include the balloon-back chair, the Thonet rocker, the chesterfield sofa, the chiffonier, the whatnot, and the davenport.
