Sustainability
Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.

Design Classics - The Overmantle Mirror

As the name suggests, an overmantle mirror is intended to hang above a mantelpiece, with the flat bottom edge running parallel to the mantel. Most antique overmantle (or overmantel) mirrors available today are French 19th century and English Victorian. In both cases the elaborate carving and gold-leafed giltwood frames make them eye-catching statement pieces, bringing instant grandeur and elegance to a room.
As with any antique, condition is key to value. Gilding and gesso are delicate and when compromised should be restored by a specialist. Antique mercury glass, with its shimmery foxing and natural sparkle add beautiful depth and character, so retaining the original mirror and backboards is a big advantage.
Antique mirrors have historically had a powerful, hypnotic allure. These days interior designers use them in traditional and modern homes alike to maximise space, create atmosphere and illumination.
