Designer Spotlight | Eileen Gray

Artist, Designer, Architect - The Mother of Modernism

Born in Enniscorthy, Ireland in 1878 Eileen Gray was a pioneer of modern design who pushed the boundaries of new materials after mastering the old. In 1901 Gray was one of the first women to study at the Slade School of Art. She later began learning the difficult and highly specialised craft of lacquering. After moving to Paris Gray began to create furniture as a canvas for her lacquer work which opened the door to the world of furniture design.

During the art deco period, Gray was at the forefront of the modernist movement, leading the way with tubular furniture alongside the likes of Marcel Breuer. In 1926 she designed the Bibendum Chair which remains as stylish and modern to this day.

Gray’s design career led her to architecture, her first house was completed in 1929 titled E.1027, it was a huge success, much like her furniture, due to its consideration of human interaction and her aim to create harmony between people and objects.
