Oil and plastic on canvas

90cm x 214cm

2021

Framed in a white wooden box frame

From the Artist: This painting is inspired by the winter of 2020 in Northern France, where I now have a studio. It is a fusion of thoughts, feelings and imagery taken from walks in the landscape during that winter. It is a combination of oil and non-recyclable plastic on canvas, with the large sweeping black marks ironed on to the raw canvas before priming to show the way plastic is cutting into our landscape - our environment.
The whole composition is based around 3 x 6 pointed stars, as a nod to the divine through symmetry, structuring the majestic beauty of nature in a way that people can comprehend.

Sustainability
Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.

From the Artist:

Living and working in Alston, an area of outstanding natural beauty in Cumbria, it is impossible not to notice the beauty and majesty of the landscape that surrounds me. My work aims to explore the relationship between people and nature.

Last year I focussed on gardens and a celebratory relationship. This year, I am focussing on rivers, and as such, my paintings have become less celebratory and more considered, but hopefully still positive in outcome. I am an optimist at heart! I have introduced the use of fluorescents as underpainting, with just a hint showing through an oil painted top coat! I like the toxic beauty of fluorescents, and am interested in how we as humans are drawn to that which is bad for us.

I use the golden section for my canvases as a nod to the geometricity of nature and often reinforce this through pattern in my work
