The ‘Oxford’ desk chair was originally designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1963 this chair was produced in Denmark in 1976 by Fritz Hansen. This is the classic model with aluminium arms and padded armrests. The chair has been newly reupholstered in the finest thick tan colour hide leather and the aluminium frame has been lightly polished. The up-and-down mechanism is working but is a little slow. There is some rusting around the top of the mechanism but hidden well under the seat. The maker's label is under the seat. The Chair was designed for the professors at St Catherines College in Oxford when it had an extension built and all designed by Arne Jacobsen during this groundbreaking period of Modern design.

Sustainability
Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.

Designer Spotlight | Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen is a Danish architect and designer born in 1902. In 1924 Jacobsen studied architecture at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. As a student he was awarded a silver medal for chair design at the Paris art deco fair. He then went on to win the Danish Architects Association ‘House of Future’ competition in collaboration with Flemming Lassen which allowed him to start his own firm only a year later.

Furniture design, like many architects' come designers, came through the extension of exterior to interior. In the 1950s Jacobsen, a perfectionist, started to develop his own furniture designs; he primarily used the limitations of materials to help shape final outcomes and simple form chairs became his signature pieces. Jacobsens most recognisable homeware design is the iconic Egg Chair.
