EXHIBITION IN STORE AT THE OLD CINEMA | NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2023OPEN EVENING THURSDAY 2ND NOVEMBER 5PM - 8PM
Routes Into Nature. An Exhibition by Helen Alice Johnson Artist Helen Alice has a BA Hons in Visual Art with Art History and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art Practice and was the Saatchi Art Online Curator’s Choice in 2022 and was shortlisted from over 3000 artists worldwide for the VAA International Exhibition and Scholarship Award in 2022. She paints vibrant abstract landscapes, which aim to be celebratory in nature whilst also acknowledging that in order to celebrate our environment, we have a responsibility to care for it too. Throughout 2023 Helen Alice has visited different river locations every week and used the locations to inspire her work. Whilst focussing mainly on the Thames and the Seine (she has a second studio in Northern France) others rivers have also crept in along the way – for example the River Medway and the River Stour in Kent. Helen begins with a visit to a river location and works en plein air in her many sketchbooks. She then takes those initial studies, along with photographs, back to the studio and develops them into final pieces. Helen Alice is interested in the relationship between people and nature, and it is this relationship that has inspired her 2023 River Series, which focusses on three sizes of canvas for each location - a large painting of 100cm x 162cm, a medium one at 50cm x 81cm and a small at 25cm x 40.5cm. All these sizes are based on the Golden ratio of 1:1.62, a mathematical ratio found hidden in the forms of nature. |
