The Old Cinema

Designer Spotlight | Fabricius & Kastholm

Fabricius and Kastholm's furniture designs were known for their minimalist elegance, functionality, quality, and attention to detail. Their furniture designs drew inspiration from Danish and international design legends such as Hans J. Wegner and Charles & Ray Eames. Together they designed furniture most commonly crafted in rosewood, steel and leather.

The duo won several awards, including the German Gute Form and Illum prizes, and their designs can be found in museums such as MoMA in New York and the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Preben Fabricius (1931–1984)
Preben Fabricius began his training as a cabinetmaker in 1952 under the renowned designer Niels Vodder, before furthering his studies at the School of Interior Design. Here, he studied under Finn Juhl and met Jørgen Kastholm. After working for Ole Hagen's design studio, Fabricius and Kastholm began working with German manufacturer Alfred Kill. In 1968, Fabricius started his own studio and later became a teacher at the School of Interior Design.

Jørgen Kastholm (1931–2007)
Jørgen Kastholm became a smith in his father's company at 19 years old, but soon went on to study interior design. After graduating Jørgen worked for Arne Jacobsen, then in 1959 he worked in a design studio in Beirut on projects such as SAS lounges and Saudi royal palaces before returning to Denmark and joining Ole Hagen's design studio. It was there that Jørgen reunited with Preben Fabricius, leading to the formation of their design partnership.
