Sustainability
Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.

The Old Cinema

Spotlight | Edwardian Period, 1901-1910

The Edwardian period marked a transition between the ornate and decorative Victorian era and the sleek and modern Art Deco movement. It was an era marked by a desire for luxury and refinement, which was reflected in the furniture of the time, before the interruption of the First World War.

Edwardian furniture is characterized by its elegance, sophistication, and attention to detail. Designers of the time favored delicate and intricate motifs such as garlands, swags, and ribbons, which were often carved into the wood or applied as decorative elements on the surface.

Edwardian furniture tends to be made in mahogany, rosewood, and satinwood, with inlaid marquetry designs or embellished with gilt-bronze mounts. Despite its opulent appearance, Edwardian furniture was also designed with functionality in mind. This was a period of great innovation in furniture design, with the introduction of new technologies such as the coil spring, which allowed for more comfortable seating.

Image: An Edwardian leather sofa demonstrates how the period bridged the gap between Victorian and Art Deco. The sofa is still chesterfield shape (a Victorian classic) but no longer with deep buttons, it has a much smoother, sleeker surface and the large tubular cushions foreshadow the obsession with geometric circles to come.
