Artist Spotlight | Kathryn Davey
From the Artist:
I like to work in many layers of thick & thin oil paint. I try to vary the consistency & application of paint, using knives, squeegees, dripping, and pouring to create the desired effect. I love to explore the texture of a surface and the effect of layering colours. I am intrigued by building textures through layers of oil colour on cold wax oil medium and plaster.
I have a passion for colour & texture and take inspiration from everything around me. I like to paint the feeling of being in a landscape, place or memory.
I sometimes plan a composition in Photoshop, but this normally acts as a start point and I let intuition take over as the painting progresses and takes its own path. I am intrigued by the way light hits the rough surface of the heavy paint. I want the painting to come out of the canvas, to be part of the room. I want the viewer to be as intrigued by the painting in close up as they are from a distance.
I have exhibited and sold paintings all over the world: London, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Majorca, Manchester, Ascot and even Cheltenham. I’ve created commissions for many homes in Zurich, Miami, Palma, London and Oxford.
I started painting professionally when my twins started school in 2015 and have been exhibiting since 2016. I am currently the chair of the local art group Artists at Home.
