Artist Profile: John PotterJohn Potter works with a unique and complex technique that he has developed over many years into his own personal style. Starting with automatic, unconscious drawing onto photographic film with a blade, he projects and draws the resulting image onto a larger scale surface, cutting it out into templates which then act as the underlying structure for paintings. His works are abstract by nature with a strong awareness of colour which is built up through gestural layers of paint to both reveal and cover up the initial compositional mark making. This creates a spatial ambiguity and unites the two aspects of his process. Often created in series, his paintings may also reference themes of art history, music and memory of place. John holds degrees in fine art from Chelsea and Camberwell colleges of art. |
