This superb painting is one of a small collection of abstract oils that we hold by the Artist William Chard. The pieces date from the late 1950s early 60s and they explore abstracted colour fields, pattern and surface texture. William Chard studied under Henry Moore and Ceri Richards. He exhibited regularly in the UK most notably at The Drian Gallery, London.

Biography: William Chard (1923-) British painter, sculptor, and teacher. William Chard studied at Chelsea in the 1940s having served a spell in prison as a conscientious objector. It was whilst at Chelsea that William met his future wife, fellow artist Pamela Chard (1926-2003) They first met at The Redfern Gallery in Cork Street and the couple went on to have successful careers as both Artists and teachers.

Of the artists who taught William and Pamela, Henry Moore (1898-1986), Ceri Richards (1903-1971) and the painter Vivian Pitchforth (1895-1982) helped William define his early work and career. Other friends around this time were Prunella Clough (1919-99), the sculptor Shelley Fausset (1920-94) who worked as Henry Moore’s assistant from 1946-48, and the painter and sculptor John Lavrin, who married Suncana, the daughter of the well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, and worked as an assistant for him. Antique and vintage goods are both stylish and sustainable.

They have a low carbon footprint thanks to their existing lifespan and they help reduce deforestation because no trees are being cut to produce them.

They help reduce landfill because, unlike mass-produced non-recyclables, they are high quality in material and craft, and are destined to outlive most other possessions.

Everything we buy interacts with the environment. Second hand furniture and accessories are not only unique, characterful and nostalgic, but also contribute to a sustainable home.
