The creeping chill of winter is upon us and soon we’ll be retreating indoors to prepare for colder months ahead. With the recent resurgence in popularity of the ‘real fire’, sales of fireplaces are soaring – and chimney sweeps have never been so busy! There is no more effective antidote to the cold weather than flames crackling in the grate and whether you yearn for a traditional wood-burning fire or stove or the convenience of a gas flame effect – or even already have a fireplace that needs updating or restoring – you can do no better than speak to the experts at English Fireplaces. If they haven’t got just what you want, they will design and make it for you.
I spoke to Mike Johnson, the proprietor of English Fireplaces which enjoys a long association with The Old Cinema, and where a collection of his hand-carved fireplaces, are displayed. I asked him about their enduring appeal: “A fireplace sets the tone of a room, providing immediate focus and can completely transform it” says Mike. He adds; “With the cost of fuel rising fast wood-burning stoves are becoming a viable alternative to traditional heating and often don’t cost as much as you expect”.
So what to go for? If you have a Victorian cottage should you have a fireplace to match? Mike recommends being guided by what you are drawn to. He points out; “ Tastes have become much more eclectic now; Georgian houses wouldn’t have had a TV but we don’t see that as a problem. Go for what you like and try not to get too hung up on matching style or period. Their appeal is not confined to old houses – many people buying new-build homes install fireplaces to add vibrant character to an otherwise bland living area.
All English Fireplaces are hand-carved by a talented and experienced team using natural materials; mainly carrara white marble, or aegean limestone. Bespoke pieces can also be made to a client’s brief; whether that’s reproducing a period original or creating an entirely new, contemporary piece.
The EFC collection ranges from the simple, contemporary lines of the ‘Arlington’, shown here (left) carved in limestone, to the magnificently elaborate ‘Louis Pompadour’ in carrara marble (centre), and bespoke pieces such as 'Ciano' (right) ; carved in Egyptian yellow marble.
Buying a fireplace can seem daunting, but the EFC will do it all for you; from initial survey to final installation. Choosing your surrounds, inserts, grates and hearths is made easy by the virtual ‘build’ facility on the website which allows you to try out ‘combinations’ before you buy. Competitively priced, the quality of is second to none, and if you don’t like anything you buy, for whatever reason, you can return it for a full refund!
So, if you don’t want to be left out in the cold, get a no-obligation quote and make this winter one to look forward to. This in an investment you will never regret.
