20th Century & Midcentury Design Soft Furnishings Policy

The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989, 1993 and 2010) set levels of fire resistance for domestic upholstered furniture, furnishings and other products containing upholstery. It states that soft furnishings must conform to BS 5852 but the following exemptions apply;

  • Items constructed before 1950.
  • Items sold to someone in the business of dealing in furniture.
  • Items sold to someone in the business of reupholstering furniture.
  • Items sold for a non-domestic UK setting (including items for export, museums and works of art).

Goods sold under this policy are sold as works of art. They must be re-upholstered to conform to BS 5852 prior to use in a UK domestic dwelling. Unless you are exempt as outlined above, by placing your order, you agree your understanding of this and will not use the goods in a UK domestic dwelling until they conform to BS 5852.

The 20th century (and 'midcentury') period is recognised as an era of special interest to collectors. On this basis, soft furnishings that contain original upholstery have been carefully selected as collector’s pieces which are purchased for their design qualities and should be stored in such a way as to reflect this.

Authorisation

You confirm that the credit or debit card being used is yours. All credit/debit card holders are subject to validation checks and authorisation by the card issuer. If the issuer of your payment card refuses to or does not, for any reason, authorise payment to us, we will not be liable for any delay or non-delivery.
