C1790 Captains's Writing Box
£4,000.00
This is a fine and almost complete example of a writing box made for an important naval officer in the reign of George III from attractive solid flame Cuban mahogany. It is edged with heavy gauge brass quadrants, and inlaid in front and in the lid with brass stringing. The full length drawer in the side was originally secured by a 'Bramah' lock, which has now been drilled through, and is now locked by a brass rod. The keys to the substantial box lock and the writing surface are original. Inside the box is the original pair of candle holders in its own fitted compartment, the key for screwing the box to a surface to prevent slippage whilst at sea, and one of its original sheffield plated top ink bottles (the other is a later replacement). Size (approximate): 22.25" x 10.75" x 8.5" (56.25 x 27.25 x 21.75 cms)
